Transport Transport is the most contentious issue WAY is facing. Our main aim is to achieve a fairer deal for young people on public transport. Firstly, we believe that concessionary fares should be made available before 9:00am (this includes child fares as well as the Wilts and Dorset BusID and BusID+). We feel it's unfair that we can't vote, can't drink, can't drive, but have to pay adult fares. Secondly, we would also like to see the adult age itself raised to 18 - in so many other areas we're considered adults only when we hit 18, why not on buses? And finally, we believe that transport to school should be provided free not only up until 16, but up until 18 if in full time education - if we are in full time education we can't work, so cannot afford expensive bus fares. To achieve these aims we have set up a petition this year which has collected nearly 100 signatures. We have also entered dialogue with both local and national politicians and are currently researching the economic arguments for decreasing the fares for young people. There will be more news on this in the New Year. |
